The Long Trail Penny Hayes 9781594931963 Books Reviews
I have to say that this is the best story I have read by Penny Hayes. She tells the tale of two women, as different as night and day. Blanche is an unhappy bride to be and Teresa, an unhappy saloon girl. Blanche's family is adamant that she marry her rather stodgy and bullheaded groom. Teresa lives in fear of the owner of the bar. She wants to get away.
The women meet by chance and after a few sparks fly, they become friends. After meeting several times, Teresa asks Blanche to leave with her. At first Blanche says no, but on the eve of a wedding that she just can't face, she makes up her mind to flee her oppressive family, and her besotted groom, casting her lot with Teresa.
What follows is an old west adventure with many twists and turns. While dodging ruthless cowboys, savage Indians, and all the while being pursued by the owner of the BlackJack Saloon, Blanche and Teresa struggle to reach safety.
As the women work together to survive, the friendship deepens into a love neither of them expected and neither can live without.
I wanted to like this book since it started well. I thought there was going to be some story and character development but the second half was just silly. It was like four different characters. In the first half Blanche is proper, rebellious but smart and kind. Teresa was smart, sharp and brave. Then the second half Blanche turned into a cold blooded murderer with a vicious temper and Teresa turned meek and demure. She skipped over the moral difficulties Blanche had over killing which would have been interesting. She touched on the dressing like a man but she let all the good ideas go for silliness. Like Native Americans letting them live for her hair. What the *blank* is an Indian guy going to do with a bunch of hair? And then, two women alone going off on a wagon trail without any training. Even women back then would have found it difficult. Then the whole lesbian aunt was too coincidental.
a western to read
